Spring fishing in southern Finland

From Laponia to the Baltic sea, there are infinite possibilities for planning a fishing trip in either winter, spring, summer, or fall. Finish waters, due to a low population density and vast bodies of water, provide the perfect conditions for much different fish to thrive and spring is a magic time to catch them. Once days begin to get longer and water temperatures begin to go up, the activity also increases. That’s our time to hit the water!

What to fish in southern Finland in the springtime?
Finland’s waters are incredibly biodiverse, you just have to know what you are looking for depending on the time of year you want to go fishing. Early spring is a great time to catch perch, roach, whitefish, pike, and zander. Towards the end of spring, you will also begin to have more opportunities for catching some beautiful salmon and trout and more active pikes.

Given the changes in temperature and the amount of sunlight, it is also important to consider how fish are behaving and where they will be spending most of their time.

What fishing methods to use in southern Finland in spring?
During the beginning of spring, ice fishing is the only way to go. It is a time to enjoy winter and its extreme fishing opportunities. Some of the most active fish around March are perch which you can catch through the ice. Then as temperatures begin to rise, but ice still covers the water, whitefish become more active. Just make sure then, that the ice is thick enough to move on top of it.

The end of spring is the most exciting part! With the break-up of the ice, pike appetite is large and they’ll want to feed like crazy. This is a great time for spin fishing pike and fly-fishing for trout and salmon.

What are the best spots to fish in southern Finland in the spring?
Once again, it depends on your target species and the time you will be going there. In general, the largest lakes are really good spots for angling. The largest lake, Lohjanjärvi, is well known for its zander, while lake Kivijärvi and the deep lake Vuohijärvi are great for salmon and trout. Smaller lakes are then great for roach and perch. You can pick a lake and find a nearby town, or vice versa, find a town you like and there will surely be a lake or river to go fishing in.

Southern Finland rivers are teeming with salmon, trout, aspen, and graylings. Some of the best known are the Aurajoki and Fiskarsinjoki, with their pristine waters rich with exciting catches as they reach the sea.

Do I need a license to fish in southern Finland?
If you are looking to go angling with a hook and a line in public waters you do not need a license. However, if you want to lure fish, you will need to pay for a license if you are between 18 and 64 years old. Other types of fishing always require fishing licenses. The best you can do is pick a spot and research special licenses or contact a local fishing guide to help you plan the trip.

Other things to do in southern Finland
One thing that makes southern Finland very cool is how cities blend in with nature, and in fact, Finland’s larger cities are all in the south. During your fishing trip, you can explore for example Helsinki, Porvoo, or Hanko. You can also combine angling with breathtaking hikes or kayaking.
