Jakub Holubec - 274 cm monster catfish from Poland

Few catches can stop the catfishing community in its tracks, but that's exactly what happened when a photo of a gigantic 274 cm catfish appeared on Jakub Holubec's Fishsurfing profile.

Caught at polish famous Rybnik Reservoir, the fish is believed to be one of the largest documented catfish ever landed in this country. For Jakub, it is not only a remarkable achievement but also a new Personal Best after more than a decade of targeting Europe's largest freshwater predator.

A lifelong passion for catfish

Jakub started fishing when he was just four years old. Over the years, catfish became his greatest passion and for the last 14 years he has dedicated most of his fishing time to pursuing them.

What attracts him to catfish is a combination of factors. For many years, the species was surrounded by mystery, making every encounter special. Catfish hold a unique status within the angling community, can be targeted using a variety of techniques and are famous for their incredible power once hooked. Most importantly, they provide unforgettable battles that keep anglers coming back for more.

The Challenge of Rybnik Reservoir

The giant fish was caught during a competition and company event organized by Mikado. Although it was Jakub's first time fishing at Rybnik Reservoir, but he knew about this water for many years.

The reservoir attracted worldwide attention last year when a world-record catfish was caught there. Heated by a nearby power plant, it offers exceptional conditions for fish growth and is considered one of Europe's most unique catfish destinations.

"I knew there were giant fish living there before I arrived." Jakub says.

Because of the reservoir's reputation, he spent considerable time preparing for the trip. He studied depth maps, analyzed historical catches, and gathered as much information as possible before arriving. However, preparation alone is never enough.

"The most important thing is finding the fish once you're actually on the water." he explains.

At the time of the competition, many catfish were gathering in shallow areas ahead of spawning. Their distribution was highly localized, making location selection critical. Fortunately, some of the largest fish had not yet spawned, meaning they were still active and catchable.

Four days of maximum effort

Jakub admits that competitive fishing is not normally his favorite style of angling. However, this event was different. As a company competition, it gave him an opportunity to prove himself in front of anglers who had never seen him fish before.

"I gave it absolutely everything." he says.

For four consecutive days, he slept no more than three hours per night and spent virtually every available moment on the water, from sunrise until sunset.

The effort paid off.

Not only he landed the giant catfish, but he also won the competition.

Perfect Conditions

While skill and preparation played a major role, Jakub believes the weather was equally important. The key factor was the wind - or rather, the lack of it. Throughout the event, conditions remained unusually calm, allowing anglers to fish vertically directly under the boat. On Rybnik Reservoir, this technique is often difficult to execute effectively due to wind and boat drift.

"I was checking the weather forecast almost a month in advance." Jakub says.

The Equipment

The fish was caught using prototype samples from Mikado equipment that Jakub is currently testing. Although he cannot reveal all the details yet, he says the final products will be released after further adjustments and that it is going to be absolutely amazing.. The setup included a vertical rod rated up to 450 grams, a 0.55 mm braided line, and a bunch of nightcrawlers used as bait. The combination proved more than capable of handling one of the biggest catfish of Jakub's life.

A Battle to Remember

The fight itself lasted approximately 20 minutes and pushed both angler and tackle to their limits.

"It cannot really be described - you have to experience it yourself. Your heart rate is at 200 bpm and after the fight you are exhausted both mentally and physically. The stress of fighting the fish is always incredibly draining for me, especially when it happens several times a day and with fish of a lifetime. The fight itself was absolutely brutal, an intense power battle lasting around 20 minutes where everything was pushed to the absolute limit." Jakub says.

For Jakub, the stress of fighting a truly giant fish can be just as demanding as the physical effort required to land it.

No room for mistakes

When asked about the most challenging aspect of catfish fishing, Jakub points to the combination of skills required.

Success depends on preparation, technique, and reliable equipment, but the decisive moments often come right beside the boat. The most important thing is not making a mistake under pressure, he explains. Equally important is the welfare of the fish. When things get hectic, injuries can happen easily. You have to think about the fish's health the entire time. It's basically multitasking from start to finish, with no room for mistakes.

What's Next?

Despite landing the fish of a lifetime, Jakub's ambitions remain as high as ever. He hopes to return to Rybnik Reservoir whenever the opportunity arises. And while a 274 cm catfish would represent the ultimate achievement for most anglers, he admits that one goal still remains. The world record.

"If there's a chance, I'll give absolutely everything to catch the biggest fish living in that water."

After a catch like this, few would doubt his determination.
