For Bruno Ramírez from Lanzarote, fishing is a way to escape everyday life, unwind and reconnect with the sea. With a particular passion for shore spinning and a dream of catching a dentex, he always has another challenge to pursue. Get to know Bruno’s story.

A love of fishing from an early age
Bruno Ramírez is an angler from Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands. His fishing journey began in childhood, when his father and grandfather introduced him to the sport. They sparked a passion that has stayed with him and continued to grow over the years.
Today, Bruno works as a chef and makes the most of every opportunity to head out on a fishing trip. His professional commitments do not always leave him as much time by the water as he would like, but he continues to make fishing a priority whenever possible. Over the years, he has explored different methods and techniques, although lures have earned a special place in his fishing world. The challenge of working a lure and adapting to changing conditions is a major part of what makes this style so appealing to him.

Dentex – the fish of his dreams
Fishing memories are not always defined by the biggest catches. Sometimes, a fish that might seem unremarkable to others holds special meaning for an angler. This was the case with the first Canary Islands jack (jurel canario) Bruno caught from the shore using spinning tackle. The catch came after many hours by the water and countless casts, making it particularly rewarding.

His experience is a reminder that a memorable catch does not have to be a record-breaker. The effort invested in pursuing a fish can make the eventual success all the more satisfying. Bruno still has plenty of challenges ahead. One of his biggest fishing dreams is to catch a dentex from the shore, ideally using spinning tackle or shore jigging. He considers it an exceptional species, and landing one remains a goal he is eager to achieve.

A passion for spinning
Bruno fishes both from the shore and from a boat, although most of his trips take place on land. Shore spinning is his clear favourite. Fishing with lures requires observation, careful decision-making and the ability to adapt to changing conditions. Choosing the right lure, identifying promising spots, reading the water and giving the lure the right action are all essential parts of the process. Depending on the target species and the characteristics of the fishing spot, Bruno uses everything from light spinning setups to considerably heavier tackle. He is also interested in rockfishing, which involves targeting fish around rocky coastal areas. Boat trips offer a different range of possibilities. Bruno enjoys trying slow jigging, light jigging and trolling, with each method presenting its own challenges and opportunities. Although he appreciates the variety that fishing from a boat provides, if he had to choose just one method, his answer would be clear -shore spinning.

Lanzarote – a world of fishing opportunities
Lanzarote is well known as a tourist destination, but its varied coastline also offers plenty of opportunities for sea anglers. The diversity of locations allows them to adapt their techniques to the conditions and species they hope to encounter. Among the species that can be targeted from the shore, Bruno mentions European seabass, baila (a type of spotted seabass), various species of sea bream, Canary Islands jacks, bluefish and barracuda. Fishing from a boat opens up further possibilities, including the opportunity to target tuna.

Bruno fishes exclusively in saltwater and the variety of species available around Lanzarote is one of the things he appreciates most. Depending on the location, time of year, technique and prevailing sea conditions, every outing can bring a different experience. Even when an angler has a specific target in mind, there is no guarantee of what might take the lure. This unpredictability means that familiar waters can still offer new challenges, even to someone who knows them well.

New waters, new adventures
Bruno would love to travel more often specifically for fishing, but work commitments and everyday responsibilities have limited his opportunities so far. Nevertheless, he already has several destinations in mind. His wish list includes northern Spain, the Ebro Delta and the Costa Brava, as well as more distant locations such as Madeira, Mauritania and Oman.
Exploring unfamiliar fishing grounds, targeting new species and discovering different techniques are all part of what makes these future adventures so appealing to him. Travelling with a fishing rod is about more than the prospect of landing an exceptional catch. It offers a chance to discover new places, experience different fishing cultures, and meet people who share the same passion, regardless of where they come from.

One more cast
To round off our conversation, we asked Bruno what advice he would give to anglers who dream of catching an exceptional fish. His answer is simple - always make one more cast. Especially when fishing with lures, success does not always come easily. You can spend hours by the water, change lures, explore new spots and still return home without a catch.
For Bruno, however, these sessions are far from wasted. Every attempt helps anglers gain experience, understand their fishing grounds better and learn from their mistakes. What feels like a disappointing day can eventually prove to be an important step towards achieving a long-awaited goal. When the fish finally comes along, all those previous attempts take on a new meaning. The experience gained along the way becomes part of the achievement itself. That is why, whenever Bruno feels that nothing more is going to happen, he makes one more cast. Sometimes, that final attempt can change the entire course of a fishing trip.

“One more cast. Patience and perseverance.”
